When will John Carter Hold a Town Hall?
In her own words below, Wilco Indivisible member Abby Brody shares her experience on February 13, trying to find out when US Representative John Carter (R-TX31) will host a town hall meeting with his constituents. Her post has been lightly edited for clarity and emphasis.
Had a long conversation with Representative Carter’s Round Rock office manager just now about Town Halls. She said Carter has had them in the past, although he doesn’t hold them now “for safety reasons,” adding, “you remember what happened to Gabby Giffords?” It was an interesting comment, considering Rep. Carter’s A+ rating from the NRA.
I’d heard she told other constituents the same thing, but couldn’t believe it. I called her on that. “That’s ridiculous,” I said. “He works for me and his other constituents and he needs to hear from us. Other senators and representatives hold town halls.”
In fact, a KUT reporter told me Rep. Carter held a Town Hall in 2013 with members of the Tea Party, two years after the shooting of Rep. Gabby Giffords.
“Well, that’s just our policy,” she said, and suggested I sign up for one of the “telephone town halls” that he is doing this year. She did say he doesn’t have any scheduled at the moment, but said I could get on the list and they’d “let me know.” I told her that wouldn’t work for me. I added that in a telephone town hall, Mr. Carter could easily avoid challenging questions by cherry-picking the ones he wants to answer. She said he answers “a lot of questions.” I told her that there are many of us who are very unhappy with that situation. Wouldn’t be great if more of us called her to let her know?
One last note. She also suggested I join the Chamber of Commerce or Kiwanis Club in order to hear him in person. I told her I didn’t need to join those organizations to speak to my representative.
Editor’s note: KUT reports that Rep. Carter has no town hall events scheduled during the current Congressional break.
So where is John Carter?
Wilco Indivisible is invited Rep. Carter to a public Town Hall we’re hosting on Wednesday, February 22. We hope he will join us.
